This interesting group was discovered in La Venta, Mexico , located immediately to the northwest of the ceremonial court buried at a depth of approximately 60 centimeters. The sixteen figures were standing upright in the sandy soil with small jade columns set vertically in the back. Fifteen of the figures form a half circle facing the central figure. The figures are of the purest Olmec Style. They represent men, their heads are large in proportion to their bodies and cranial deformation has clearly occurred, a practice followed later by the Maya. The original figures were made of varying colors at the rear and could have some type of religious significance but none of the sixteen figures are holding any type of religious object. Thus, they are notably different from numerous other Olmec sculptures. It is believed this group represents a council rather than a ritual.
