This figure is a fine jadeite reproduction of a large
statue dating to the Post Classic period 850-1250 A .D. The Chacmool
was considered a guard, an emissary or intermediary between humans
and their gods, a type of divine messenger. They are usually male
figures, leaning back on their elbows, with feet drawn to the buttocks,
and knees thrust upward. The face is harsh and the hands hold a circular
plate or bowl upon the stomach to receive the offerings. Chacmools
are found in Mexico , Chichen Itza , Mexico , and Tlaxcala Itza in

| This figure is a copy in fine jadeite of a jaguar statue
of 73 inches dating to the Protoclassic era 100 B.C.-100 A .D. The
original can still be seen at the El Baul farm in Santa Lucia, Catzumalhuapa
, Guatemala . In spite of the fact that it is a Jaguar, it sits up
and begs like a tame dog. It also has a collar which adds to the
impression that it depicts a domesticated animal. The rounded eyes
are similar to ones found in a protoclassic frog altar in Kaminaljuyu,
a Maya city located below present day Guatemala City . |

This interesting group was discovered in La Venta,
Mexico , located immediately to the northwest of the ceremonial court
buried at a depth of approximately 60 centimeters. The sixteen figures
were standing upright in the sandy soil with small jade columns set
vertically in the back. Fifteen of the figures form a half circle
facing the central figure. The figures are of the purest Olmec Style.
They represent men, their heads are large in proportion to their
bodies and cranial deformation has clearly occurred, a practice followed
later by the Maya. The original figures were made of varying colors
at the rear and could have some type of religious significance but
none of the sixteen figures are holding any type of religious object.
Thus, they are notably different from numerous other Olmec sculptures.
It is believed this group represents a council rather than a ritual. |
